We talk with Vipul Doshi, co-founder at Zenvoya about why travel feels broken after you hit “book” and how generative AI can finally support travelers through planning, disruption, and on-trip decisions. We push past automation hype to focus on trust, brand values, and the metrics that actually predict loyalty.
• Why the travel industry optimises transactions instead of relationships
• What “relationship at scale” looks like with an AI travel assistant that remembers context
• Why marketing promises must match AI delivered customer experience
• How information stops being a moat and judgment becomes the differentiator
• Where cost cutting AI goes wrong and how to protect human moments
• The new loyalty KPIs: repeat engagement, repurchase, lifetime value
• Why banks and platforms can become travel distributors by owning the audience
• What founders should unlearn about AI and what to build next
Designing Travel Around The Traveler With Generative AI
Most travel brands obsess over the booking transaction because it is easy to measure, optimize, and profit from. But the real customer experience in travel starts earlier, with discovery and planning, and it becomes brutally real once the trip begins. When a flight is delayed, a connection is missed, or a hotel room disappears, travelers often find themselves alone inside a maze of call centers, policies, and apps that do not remember them. The episode argues that the industry built a great checkout flow while neglecting the relationship that should carry a customer through disruption, stress, and high-stakes moments. That gap is where trust is won or lost, and it is why “customer-first travel” must mean more than a smoother payment screen.
Generative AI changes what is economically possible because it can deliver personalization at scale, something that used to require expensive human labor. A true AI travel assistant is not just a search box that returns “100 flights and 5,000 hotels” and forces the traveler to filter everything again next month. It keeps context across the entire journey: seat preferences, dietary needs, budget constraints, location priorities, and intent. Context plus intent is the shift from information to judgment. When information is abundant and inventory is widely accessible, differentiation moves to who does the hard work on the traveler’s behalf. The promise is a single conversation that persists from planning to booking to on-trip support, with the AI remembering what matters and adapting when conditions change.

That shift creates a marketing and product reckoning: the brand promise can no longer live only in ads and landing pages. If AI increasingly delivers the experience, then the AI must carry the organization’s values. The episode highlights the historical mismatch where marketing promises empathy while customer service delivers long queues and scripted replies. With AI, that mismatch can scale instantly, for better or worse. This is why customer service and marketing converge around a shared narrative, shared values, and consistent tone. Trust becomes the core asset, and the “product experience” becomes the lived experience across every touchpoint, including automated ones. A helpful, caring AI can strengthen loyalty; a cold automation layer can silently destroy it.
Finally, the conversation reframes growth strategy and metrics for travel technology, OTAs, and any brand that wants to sell travel. If banks, credit card issuers, and platforms already own the audience and relationship data, they can become powerful travel distributors because they know spend patterns and preferences. For founders, competitive advantage shifts from owning inventory to owning engagement, relationship, and data access. That also means updating KPIs: stop rewarding average handling time and start tracking repeat engagement, reduced repeat contacts, repurchase behavior, and customer lifetime value. Add practical product ideas like lightweight gamification for off-season engagement and better tooling for group travel decisions and budget splitting. The takeaway is simple: AI is not only automation; it is a chance to rebuild travel around the traveler.
